400gsm Fiberglass Cloth Roll

Product Overview

400gsm fiberglass cloth roll is a heavy-duty structural fabric manufactured from high-strength E-glass filaments, engineered for demanding load-bearing applications. With an areal weight of 400 g/m² ± 5% and thickness ranging from 0.38 mm to 0.45 mm, this cloth delivers exceptional tensile strength of 380 MPa in the warp direction and 360 MPa in the weft direction. The robust weave design incorporates a high fiber volume fraction (up to 60%) that enables fabrication of thick, high-performance laminates with minimal ply count. The cloth operates continuously at temperatures from –60°C to 550°C and is compatible with all major resin systems. The roll format provides efficient material utilization for large-scale industrial applications including wind energy, marine, and infrastructure projects.

Core Advantages

High load capacity Each layer delivers significant mechanical performance, reducing the number of plies required for thick structural laminates.
Superior impact resistance Dense weave construction provides excellent energy absorption and damage tolerance for crash-resistant structures.
Excellent fatigue performance Designed for cyclic loading applications with minimal strength degradation after 2 million cycles at 50% UTS.
High fiber volume fraction Allows consolidation to achieve 55–60% fiber volume, maximizing mechanical properties in final laminates.
Thermal stability Retains structural integrity at elevated temperatures with minimal creep and dimensional change.
Process compatibility Works with hand lay-up, vacuum infusion, resin transfer molding, and autoclave processing without modification.

Handling & Installation Notes

Material handling Use mechanical lifting equipment for rolls exceeding 100 kg. Store rolls on pallets with edge protection to prevent damage.
Cutting methods Water-jet or CNC cutting recommended for production volumes. For field cutting, use heavy-duty shears with carbide blades.
Lay-up procedure Apply resin using pressure-fed rollers or spray guns. Use compaction rollers to achieve uniform fiber distribution and resin flow.
Curing schedule For epoxy systems, cure at 80°C for 6 hours or 120°C for 3 hours. Post-cure at 150°C for 2 hours for maximum properties.
Storage conditions Store at 15–30°C, 40–60% RH in original packaging. Keep rolls on mandrels to prevent flat spots. Shelf life: 36 months.
Quality assurance Inspect each ply for weave uniformity, broken filaments, and contamination. Document ply orientation and sequence for traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

400gsm cloth provides 25% higher tensile strength per layer and 35% greater flexural modulus compared to 300gsm cloth. The heavier fabric reduces the number of plies needed for equivalent laminate thickness, simplifying manufacturing processes. For applications requiring high load capacity with minimal weight penalty, 400gsm cloth offers improved mechanical performance while maintaining good handling characteristics.

For vacuum infusion, use low-viscosity resins (100–200 cP) to ensure complete wet-out through the dense weave structure. The cloth's permeability of 1.2 × 10⁻⁹ m² requires infusion times of 8–15 minutes per meter length. We recommend pre-heating resin to 35–40°C to improve flow and reduce void content. A flow medium is recommended for panels larger than 2 m².

Yes, the cloth is suitable for prepreg production with epoxy, BMI, and phenolic resin systems. The uniform thickness allows precise resin content control (32–38% by weight). For prepreg applications, we recommend using resin film thickness of 0.10–0.14 mm per ply. The cloth provides stable handling characteristics on prepreg machines and maintains excellent tack during lay-up.

For pipe wrapping, the cloth provides external corrosion protection and structural reinforcement. Maximum operating pressure depends on the substrate pipe's design parameters. The cloth has been tested in applications with external pressures up to 12 MPa when combined with a rigid laminate structure. Always follow pipe manufacturer guidelines and perform pressure testing.

400gsm cloth maintains mechanical properties down to –196°C. At cryogenic temperatures, tensile strength increases by approximately 8–10% due to molecular alignment effects, while elongation decreases slightly. The cloth is suitable for cryogenic storage tanks, superconducting magnet supports, and aerospace applications requiring extreme temperature resistance.

For structural repairs, use a minimum overlap of 75 mm with 6–10 plies of 400gsm cloth. The overlap should be designed so that the repair strength exceeds the original structure's design strength. Use a scarf angle of 3–5 degrees for high-load areas. Always perform destructive testing on repair samples to validate the bond quality.
